Hiring foreign workers in Bulgaria: the process step by step

For an employer doing this for the first time, hiring workers from third countries can look like a maze: permits, institutions, consulates, registrations. In practice the process has a clear logic. Here is what happens at each stage - and what is expected from you.

Step 1: Consultation and choosing the route

Everything starts with your need: which positions, how many people, for how long. Based on that, the right legal route is chosen - seasonal employment up to 90 days, Visa D for 1-3 years, or the EU Blue Card for highly qualified specialists. Choosing correctly here determines the timeline and cost of everything that follows.

Step 2: Recruitment and vetting of candidates

Candidates come through established partner networks in India, Nepal and other countries. Vetting covers professional experience, qualifications and motivation - the goal is not simply to fill a position, but to find people who will stay and perform. You review profiles and make the final choice.

Step 3: Documents and permits

This is the administrative heart of the process: employment contracts, applications, declarations and company documents are prepared and submitted, and the case moves through the Employment Agency and the Ministry of Interior. Complete and correct documents are what keeps the procedure on schedule.

Step 4: Visa and travel

After approval, the worker applies for a visa at the Bulgarian consulate in their country. Once the visa is issued, travel is organised - tickets, arrival dates and coordination with your start-of-work plans.

Step 5: Arrival and onboarding

The work does not end at the airport. After arrival come the residence card, the mandatory registrations and the practical setup - accommodation, bank account, first days at work. Good support at this stage is what turns a hired worker into a stable part of the team.

With an experienced partner, you have one point of contact through all five steps and always know what happens next. The only thing the process genuinely needs from you is an early start - everything else can be handled for you.
